CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
Ethan
The next two weeks were hectic and yet, I felt energized and competent, like I could take on the world and win. I knew I had Lucy to thank for that. She was an elixir that quenched my soul when my grandfather or Trent started fucking with my confidence.
I no longer concerned myself with trying to keep a distance from her. She shared my bed each night. Going to bed and waking up with her by my side was something I was getting too used to, but I wasnât going to deny myself the pleasure of.
Most days I worked with the partners on my own, not sure what my grandfather or Trent were up to. On occasion I had to work with them, which was particularly hard since Trentâs vision of the project differed from mine. I had to believe the partners when they told me they liked my plans and not worry about what Trent was doing.
There were times when Lucy was with me. When in public together, she let me hold her hand and a few times, I was able to steal her away to a private room for a quickie. As far as I was concerned, we looked like the newlyweds we technically were.
Sometimes I forgot this marriage wasnât real. That soon it would be over, and weâd be going our own ways, pursuing our own dreams. But right now, neither of us seemed to think of that. We lived in a bubble that would soon enough pop, but until then, weâd pretend we were the real deal.
The partners seemed quite taken with her and it was clear that Trent didnât like that. He frequently tried to slip her up or embarrass her. I wanted to punch his lights out, but Lucyâs quips more often than not put him in his place.
Tonight, we were all invited to Mr. Nadirâs home for a party and Lucy showed up on my arm looking stunning as usual. I wanted to keep her close to me partly because I wanted every man in the room to know she was mine, but also, I didnât trust Trent, or my grandfather for that matter. But at this moment, I was talking with Mr. Amin and Lucy was a few feet away talking with one of the other wives. From the corner of my eye, I saw Trent approach her.
âI hope youâre not getting too used to all of this,â he said to her when the other woman left.
She gave him a wary sigh. âIâll bite. Why shouldnât I get used to this?â
âOnce Ethan is done with you, youâll be back living whatever mundane life you had before.â
She looked at him sharply. âAre you really so insecure about yourself that you have to constantly harass mundane me? Instead of trying to make me, and therefore Ethan, look bad, why donât you work harder and earn your grandfatherâs favor like a real man?â
I nearly did a spit take of my champagne. I wanted to
