I hurried through the front door and heard Theresa’s voice.

“Why isn’t he answering the phone?”

“Theresa,” I called out.

“Olivia?”

We met in the dining room and she grabbed my arms.

“It’s okay,” I said.

“It’s not okay,” she said. “Kate has Lucy?”

“She doesn’t have Lucy. She’s visiting her. They’re in the park. They’re sitting together. Trust me, it’s nothing major.”

“Yeah? You want to lie to me some more?”

“Lie to you?” I asked.

She leaned closer to me. “Your eyes. You were crying.”

I swallowed hard. “So?”

“You’re scared. Like me. Like Tyler.”

“Yeah,” I said. “But you know what? We have to be strong for Tyler. Think about everything he does for his family. Right now, the last thing he needs is someone in his family going off the rails.”

Theresa stepped back and crossed her arms. “Did you just call me crazy?”

“Yeah,” I said. My heart started to race. “Yeah, I did. If you get loud and start yelling, it’ll make things worse for him.”

Theresa let out a hmm sound.

She nodded.

“You’ve got some guts, Olivia,” she said.

“I just want Tyler to be happy.”

“Then I guess I’m going to go shut the hell up.”

“Theresa…”

She smiled at me. “Don’t even think about apologizing. Don’t stand up to me and then cave right away. Tyler needs you. I need you. You’re the calm in all of this, Olivia.”

Theresa went back into the kitchen and I fell against a wall.

Again… my mind wanted to know how.

I shut my eyes.

I pictured Tyler towering over Barry. Threatening Barry. Making Barry shiver and shake so bad he wet himself. I had never seen Barry like that before. It was a time when he realized his job, power, and money didn’t mean a thing. And seeing Tyler like that…

Whew.

The moment came and went as I opened my eyes and was swept back into reality.

I looked down at my left hand.

The ring that really wasn’t mine.

A promise that was never really made.

But it felt real.

I wanted it to be real.

No matter what went on in Tyler’s life, I wanted to be part of it.
