ATTACHING THE COUNTERWEIGHT

If your neckpiece is front-heavy—that is, if it has lots of beads, fringe, or other decorative elements that add weight to the front—you might want to add a counterweight at the back. Counterweights also add an elegant finish and a point of interest at the back of the piece. For example, because there is so much fringe on Eagle Feather, page 196, I added a beaded stone counterweight.

You can also add decorative metal coins or a metal fishing weight. Just link the element to one or both of the reducers or to the center of the safety chain, using jump rings or loops of beads or chain, as shown in the drawings at right.
