DEFINITION OF LINES
Horizontal lines represent rest and tranquility, a strong base, stability and steadiness.
Vertical lines also represent stability. They are the opposite of the horizontal line, and complement it perfectly by forming with it squares and rectanglesâthe two basic geometric shapes of nearly all architectural structure. Vertical lines additionally represent awareness and alertness and have an uplifting quality, as observed in Gothic architecture.
Diagonal lines are in transitional movement between vertical and horizontal stability, thereby expressing the exertion of energy. The visual energy and movement expressed by a diagonal line may be subtle or severe depending on its angle.
Curved lines represent constant movement of various degrees determined by the radius, expressed perfectly by a circle.
