IN THE FAR EAST, there still survive elements of alternative medicine in the form of traditional massage that can be found in India, Thailand and Malaysia among other places with which I have had first hand experience. I can therefore safely and honestly attest to the veracity of the claims that traditional massage such as you find in these and other places seeks to cure the patient by focusing on the source of the problem which according to ancient approaches to medicine find their root cause in intoxification of the blood, poor circulation of the blood which is directly related to the congestion of the blood and atrophy of the internal muscles, poor aeration of the blood as a result of shallow breathing, inadequate sleep together with sleeping at the wrong times of day and night, unsuitable nutrition of the body, and finally unsuitable life-style in general, not to mention the noise and pollution that we must live with every day of our lives in today’s world as a matter of course.

The human hand and the subtle intricacies of the sense of touch play a major role in the healing process, although you would never know it judging from anyone’s experience in a doctor’s office in the Western world. Doctors make investigations with rarefied machines like MRI and Cat Scan; they probe invasively into the inner sanctum of the body through every available orifice; ply you with pills and tablets to deaden the pain and hide the symptoms; but they never actually lay their hands on you, and if they have to for some reason, they now wear latex gloves. However, in ancient Tibetan medical traditions, for example, a doctor could effectively diagnose the ailment of a patient by merely feeling his pulse.
