I believe that God wants us to think in similar terms about our fellow human beings who are not Christians. If a family member, friend, or neighbor is at risk of stepping into harm’s way or potentially harming others, the loving thing to do is step in, affirm the person, and without judgment ask the kinds of questions Jesus asked the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well.

“You say you have no husband. This is true. The man you are with now is not your husband. How is it working out for you? Are you happy? Are you experiencing fullness? Is your soul’s thirst quenched and overflowing? If not, would you like to talk about living water? If you’re not ready for that, it’s okay. But if you’re interested, I’ll be right here.”

As Jim Rayburn, the founder of Young Life, used to say, we are able to speak truth to people once we have earned the right to be heard. One of the ways we do this is by realizing that it is not, it never has been, and it never will be a Christian’s job to judge non-Christians. “What have I to do with judging outsiders?” Paul writes. “God judges those outside.”[21] Instead, we must affirm wherever we can and critique when we must—while never being critical.

When tempted otherwise, it is always good to remember these words from James, the half brother of Jesus:
