Maple trees are prized in Japanese gardens for the delicate effect of the sunshine seen through their filigree-like leaves. Other trees in this garden include mokkoku, nezumimochi and hisakaki.

The height of the kutsunugi-ishi, a larger stone provided for changing into garden slippers, is set according to the rule that the visitor’s knees should be bent slightly above horizontal when they sit down. The Benigamo stone used here changes its color to a reddish tone when watered, and was therefore selected for this special role.
