“And here’s the list of client contacts,” Jordan was saying. “These are the ones to look out for. Mr. Murdock from TransView Shipping—”

Both of them sat at Jordan’s, well, now his desk, and Jordan patiently explained to him his list of tasks and responsibilities as Isaac’s personal assistant. His head swam.

Noel tried his best to pay attention. Maybe start scribbling notes on his pad. Really. That proved hard when the other lion shifters in the office kept sneaking him suspicious or outright murderous glances.

When Isaac introduced him earlier that morning as his new personal assistant, he felt like a fish out of water. The other human employees didn’t react the same way the lion shifters did. The humans gave him smiles, polite ‘hellos,’ but the lions only gave him icy stares and silence.

Noel told himself repeatedly not to be disheartened.

Jordan sighed and stopped. “Noel, are you listening? If you need me to go through any part of that again, ask. Because I’ll be transferred to the department downstairs and no one will be able to help you.”

So far, the submissive lion shifter had been patient and professional with him. On occasion, Jordan had also been curt and indifferent with him.

“You don’t like me.” Noel didn’t mean to say those words out loud, damn it. He regretted it immediately. Now, he sounded childish.

“I don’t know you,” Jordan corrected. “None of us do. How do you expect us to react when our Alpha suddenly brought you in? Everyone knows you’re more than his personal assistant.”

“Everyone knows?” he repeated. Noel could feel his cheeks heat up. Now wasn’t the time to be embarrassed.

Jordan paused, as if he’d said words he shouldn’t have as well. “What are you to Isaac?”

“Isaac rescued me from three Bloody Claws hyena shifters. I would have died if it wasn’t for him. It’s not easy being an unbound Omega in this city,” he said. “Look, I know you’re just being protective of your Alpha—not that Isaac needs anyone’s protection—but I don’t harbor any bad intentions either. I’m also a hard worker.”

Jordan let out a breath. “We might have just met today, but I can tell you’re not a bad person. Please understand. We’ve been hoping the Alpha would find his mate for years, but you. Well. You’re not a one of us, not a lion shifter even.”

Okay. They were talking at least. Progress, because earlier, Jordan seemed like he only wanted to get the task of settling him into his new position as fast as possible. “Not what you guys had in mind?” he asked.

“That’s an understatement. I have no prejudice against Omegas, but you’re a werewolf.”

“I’m not Isaac’s official mate yet.” Instinct made Noel touch the side of his neck. Last night, he’d been certain Isaac would bite him, hoped for it as well. Isaac made some valid points. It wasn’t the right time yet. He continued, “He wanted to wait, so I can get to know his pride mates better and vice versa.” Noel took a gamble, telling Jordan the truth, but he had nothing to hide.
