Agent Strong jammed a finger against his ear, trying to listen to the voice in his earpiece over the sound of the alarm.
“The facility is under attack,” he said.
“We figured that out!” cried Lisa Marie.
“Quack!” added Drake, flapping around in panic.
The image on screen changed to show a bird’s-eye view of a building. Smoke was pouring out of a hole in the wall, as teddy bears piled in through it.
“Where is this?” Lisa Marie demanded.
Agent Strong stared at the screen in disbelief. “Uh … that’s classified.”
“It’s here, isn’t it?” said Lisa Marie, grabbing him by the lapels of his suit and shaking him. “It’s this building!”
“Yes! Yes, it’s here,” admitted Agent Strong.
“Oh no! What do we do? What do we do?” yelped Vernon, hopping from foot to foot.
Bearvis somersaulted down from Lisa Marie’s shoulder and stood between the children and the door, paws raised and ready to fight. “Stay behind me,” he warned. “If any of those furry mommas shows their face, they’re gonna get it. The King’s gonna take care of business. You wait and see.”
Agent Strong cleared his throat. “Or, alternatively…”
Behind him, the mirror slid back to reveal a hidden room beyond. “I knew it,” Vernon cried.
He screamed in fright as the duck flew past him, wings flapping frantically. It tumbled through the gap where the mirror had been, gave a few urgent quacks, then began pecking at a closed door at the back of the secret room.
“Go. Go. Get out of here,” Agent Strong instructed, shoving Lisa Marie through the gap and tossing Vernon through after her. “I’ll stay here and hold them off.”
“We’ll get to the palace and stop all this,” Lisa Marie said.
“What? On our own?” cried Vernon. “You can’t be serious?”
Agent Strong shook his head. “No. It’s too dangerous. There’s a safe room two doors down on the right. There’s no way they can get inside. Go there and hide.”
“That’s a much better plan,” agreed Vernon.
Bearvis scampered up Agent Strong.
“’Scuse me. Coming through,” he said, then he flipped off the agent’s shoulder and landed lightly at Lisa Marie’s feet. He winked up at her, before turning back to the space where the mirror had been.
“Don’t worry, son. The King’ll make sure they stay outta trouble,” Bearvis drawled.
“See that you do,” said Agent Strong, then the mirror slid back into place.
There was something about the way Bearvis was grinning that made Lisa Marie suspicious.
“You didn’t,” she said.
Bearvis held up a set of car keys. “I did.”
“Bearvis, you’re a genius!” said Lisa Marie.
“Well, thank you,” drawled Bearvis, swinging the keys around on his paw. “Thank you very much.”
