On whose territory?

The assumption (and acceptance) of dominance is greater when a person is on their own territory. Other things being equal, an incumbent can be dislodged only if the usurper is unmistakably more powerful. Even low-ranked persons can behave with great bravery, confidence and determination when operating from their own home or workspace. This is why bosses prefer to call employees into their office to interview them or give them a dressing down, rather than going to see them in their own workspace.

If a man comes home to find his wife in bed with a lover, the lover will usually retreat, even if he is bigger or higher in social rank. This may be partly down to guilt but it is also in recognition of the fact that people fight more ferociously in defence of their own patch than when they are away from home.
