It was weeks before my body responded to her again at all. Weeks after that before she would trust herself to touch me. Even when we touched, we started again slower than we had started at first, with her asking for permission for any touch, then using only her soft hand—my favorite one—to do so. Then we progressed to her other hand, then both, then her mouth, too.

The door of the room with the chair stayed closed.

We were gentle, learning each other all over again, new patterns and rhythms, how our bodies might fit together this time. We started and stopped, her voice slow and low every time she asked permission to do something that was suddenly new.

One morning, I opened the door to the room. It smelled dusty and sweet. She came home and went upstairs to change. I heard the squeak of the floor, the scrape of the chair on the hardwood floor. When I went up, I found her standing naked in front of the chair, the collar in her hand. I went to her when she beckoned.
