Namtrul Rinpoche | Letter 19

Written as he was leaving Markhok or shortly thereafter, Namtrul Rinpoche emphasizes the word for “affection” by repeating it at the start of three lines.152 Here again he conveys fondness and intimacy through a string of terms of endearment: “consort,” “bestower of bliss,” “beloved,” “vine of mind,” and more.153 Through a repetition of terms, he strikes an optimistic tone, portraying the “best” of circumstances and praising the steadiness of her “mind,” while referring to himself as “lowly” in the humility required of first-person speech.154 Again, naturalistic images of animals and habitats are used to emphasize their inseparability and mutual compatibility. With the quick beat of six syllable lines toward the end of the letter, Namtrul Rinpoche conveys a sense of urgency for their plans to move forward.

Consort, maturing the nectar of awareness,

Bestower of bliss, guide to a blissful mind,

Glorious partner, bestowing the four joys,

I make this offering of a letter to you.

Affectionate vine of the mind,

Affectionate lady, steady as a mountain,

Affectionate beloved, heart friend,

My reply to the message before me:

Best in the stainless vast sky above,

Best, the horse-drawn chariot of the splendid sun,155

Best, emanating a hundred clear light rays,

Best, to delight like finding great joy.

Lowly Pema Lodrö, in appearance,

Lowly by sickness, both hot and cold,

Lowly, while extremely ill,

Lowly, but not sorrowful.

Mind, steady as the king of mountains,

Mind, not worried or wavering,

Mind, radiant, a story of delight,

Mind, send letters to please the mind.

Snow mountain palace, bright white,

The snow lion unfurls its turquoise mane.

Mountain and lion are inseparable.

This is the power of previous deeds.

Invincible turquoise lake, in its midst,

A golden-eyed fish flaunts its six fins.

Lake and fish are inseparable.

This too is the legacy of the past.

Pleasure grove in a sandalwood forest,

The tigress brandishes its six stripes.

Forest and tigress are inseparable.

This too is worldly inheritance.

Love love—aim of my heart,

Joy joy—vine of my mind,

Dear dear—gleam of my heart,

Kind kind—I don’t dare part.

Yearn yearn—sole support for mind.

Match match—shared deeds and wishes.

Steady steady—sole steadfast friend.

Beauty beauty—recalling your fine face.

Sweet sweet—recalling your lovely speech.

Clear clear—recalling your wise mercy.

Recall recall—I won’t forget your words.

Joy joy—showing the play of the four joys.

Bliss bliss—wisdom of bliss-emptiness.

Arise arise—it arises in mind.

When when—my hope to meet you.

Again again—it’s vivid in mind.

Sad sad—words of affection.

Write write—I set down what arose.

May your lifespan be stable and immutable,

May your wishes be fulfilled without exception,

Along with your hopes and aspirations.

Turquoise divine son, Karma Dorje,

Flashing playful sidelong glances,

Recalling heartfelt words of affection,

Within the joys and sorrows of affection,

On stainless Chinese paper,

My unsullied ink designs,

Writing these inexpressible words,

May they be blameless and worthy.156
