Well, we knew the horses were off. Right after breakfast, a batch of Boche prisoners came by, forerunners of thousands. . . . All the way up thru Beaumont and on into the woods were prisoners, prisoners and disabled tanks and artillery. We worked in the mud at the edge of the woods till after dinner. What impressed us right away was the easiness of the whole thing, very very few wounded and killed. Word kept coming back that our boys could hardly keep up with the Boche. In the afternoon we packed the stuff on some ambulances, and hiked with Major Lawrence over to St. Baussant. Here we cleaned up a couple of dug-outs the Boche had left earlier in the day—fixed it for a station. On our way across No Man’s Land we followed in the path of our tanks. This was the first American manned affair. . . . The engineers were already busy building bridging over the trenches. Autos were in the ditch everywhere. Ahead the village and woods were aflame, and smoking a hundred feet in the air. Everyone was hurrying on. There was nothing for us to do. By daylight the next morning we were off hiking again—through Maizerais and Essey on to Pannes. In Pannes we ran a-muck in a great storehouse of a Divisional Quartermaster. The night before the men had found all sorts of things to eat and drink. We had honey, sugar, bread and butter and jam, fish and other stuff left in the officer’s quarters. And all of us got lots of souvenirs—all kinds and descriptions.
