Vera let me into her apartment and my eyes clung to her in a very dangerous way.

It was bad enough I had all the things the guys said running through my head. The whole notion of sexual tension and things boiling over and what would happen if Vera and I ended up crossing the line. A no win kind of thing… except that if we ended up in my bed, at least we’d have some fun, right?

What made it worse was Vera herself.

I wasn’t sure I had ever met a woman who could pull off wearing dresses the way she did.

She was seductive yet professional.

Never showing too much but showing way more than enough.

Today she had her hair pulled up.

Twisted around into some messy style that still somehow looked executive ready.

Her neck and shoulders were exposed.

Soft, milky skin, the subtleness of her collarbone showing… all of which made not much sense as to why I was picking that out.

“We need to go over a few things,” Vera said.

I blinked, ending all my thoughts, ready to get down to business.

“Let’s talk, my love.”

“What happened…”

“About what?” I asked with a grin.

“Cora. My mother. The whole sequence of it all.”

“So you talked to Cora?”

“Yes.”

“Did you remember telling her to come over?”

“No,” Vera said. “I started to feel… it doesn’t matter. She came over. There wasn’t any need for you to stay, Brett. You didn’t have to do that.”

“I know I didn’t have to do that.”

“Why did you? What were you thinking? I was going to wake up in some hangover bliss of horniness, looking for a dick to ride?”

“Wow,” I said.

“Am I wrong?”

“What if I just wanted to make sure you were okay?”

“You could have done that though texts.”

I felt Vera studying me. Really wanting an answer to a question I couldn’t give an answer to.

Why did I stay and sleep on her couch?

I wasn’t sure.

Maybe it was to kiss her ass.

Maybe she was right and I was hoping to get a piece of her ass in the morning when she woke up hungover, tired, hungry, aching for a little attention.

Maybe I liked her and wanted to-

“Cora tried to kiss me,” I blurted out.

“What?” Vera asked.

“Yeah. She was putting moves on me. Hard.”

“What’s your point?”

“I didn’t do anything with her. I turned her down. Sent her packing.”

“Okay. Maybe you should have fucked her on the counter. Get it out of your system.”

I saw the look in her eyes and the way her upper lip shivered a little.

She didn’t mean that. And she didn’t like it.

“Look, Brett, we have to forget about what happened,” she said. “Especially my mother. Okay? That woman is not stable.”

“Really? I would have never guessed.”

“It’s not funny,” Vera said. “We’re supposed to have lines here. Lines we don’t cross.”

“You’re the one that crossed the line first.”

“Excuse me?”

“Look how drunk you got. What was I supposed to do? You were two seconds away from making a complete fool of yourself. How would that look to the organization?”

“Okay, fine, you win on that one, Brett.
