CHAPTER 7

Country Activities and Wine Cellars

‘Town and country do your best for in this parish I must rest.

Words that traditionally accompany the throwing up of the St Columb hurling ball

Building a night-scented garden

Come into the garden, Maud,

For the black bat night has flown,

Come into the garden, Maud,

I am here at the gate alone.

And the woodbine spices are wafted abroad,

And the musk of the rose is blown.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson

A night-scented garden can be virtually any size and, even if you are an apartment dweller, you could still have window boxes and hanging baskets, for the smaller plants. Some ideas for the plants include violets (Viola odorata) of which there are many varieties, available from Groves Nurseries and the Devon Violet Nursery; the white varieties of Nicotiana (the tobacco plant); Colchester White (Centaurea); Four o’clock Alba (Pisonia alba); Night-scented Stock (Matthiola longipetala); Night-blooming Jasmine (Jasminum cestrum nocturnum); Iris Pippa Sandford; Angel’s Trumpet of the genus Datura and, during warm seasons, certain Gardenias such as Gardenia Jasminoides; not to forget Woodbine or honeysuckle (Lonicera periclymenum). Gently sprinkling the plants with water, after sunset, will help to release the fragrances.

As well as a night-scented garden, you might also like to consider in the ordinary course of things, combining, over a pergola, a sturdy, climbing, scented Bourbon rose, such as Kathleen Harrop, or a scented Wichurana rambler, such as Albertine, with summer jasmine (jasminum officinale) and winter jasmine (jasminum polyanthus), for show and scent. Of course, if you want to attract butterflies, you must have a ‘butterfly bush’ and Buddleia davidii is a good one.
