Chapter Nine

Micah had failed.

His goal had been to get his program going and bring some of the guys like Jerome up from the city and offer them a fresh start. They just needed to hold on a little longer.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this. He shouldn’t have had to attend his second funeral in just a handful of weeks.

The heaviness against his ribs lessened slightly as his property came into view.

And he saw Paige’s car parked by the barn.

Instead of pulling into his driveway, he drove past his house and parked next to her car.

He gripped the steering wheel, then blew out a breath before exiting the vehicle.

Paige appeared in the doorway, and it was all he could do to keep from running to her and wrapping her in his embrace. Instead, he lifted his hand and gave a little wave. “Hey.”

Without a word, she opened her arms. His chest heaved. He walked into them, wrapped his arm around her waist and buried his face into her shoulder, breathing in the floral scent of her shampoo.

“Natalie told me about your friend. I’m so sorry for your loss.” Her words whispered against his ear.

His eyes filmed as the knot in his throat tightened. All he could do was nod without sobbing into her hair.

He drew back, tipped her chin and searched her blue eyes. He lowered his head slowly and brushed a soft kiss across her lips. Her hands cradled his face as she returned the kiss. Micah tightened his hold on her, not wanting to let her go.

Her fingers slid into his hair as she slowed the kiss, then pressed her cheek to his chest.

He rested his chin on the top of her head as he willed his racing heart to return to its regular rhythm. Whatever that was when Paige was around.

“Welcome home.” Her words were muffled against the cotton fabric of his T-shirt.

Two little words.

Yet they were the best ones he’d heard in a while.

“If I’d known that was going to be my welcome, I would have left sooner.” He grinned as her cheeks reddened.

She stroked a thumb over his cheekbone, her eyes bright and a smile tugging at her lips. “What am I going to do with you?”

He had a few ideas. He shrugged. “Just hug me, I guess.”

“I can do that.” She slid her arms around his waist and rested her head against his chest again. “I missed you. I’m glad you’re home.”

“Me, too.”

Home.

Another word that filled him with warmth. He hadn’t had a real home since he left the farm to enlist.

And now he didn’t want to leave again unless Paige was at his side.

As her fingers tightened around his back, Micah finally admitted what he’d been too afraid to face—he was in love with Paige.

And he had no idea what to do about it. But for now, he simply enjoyed the moment.

In her embrace, he felt forgiven, as if all the mistakes of his past were wiped away. He felt whole, whatever the shape of his body.
