Tegan leaned in on a hushed voice so that the three supernatural beings with big ears would find it harder to overhear them. “Well, you obviously have a soft spot for your wolf…”

“Firstly,” Karina said, holding up her witching finger to silence her friend. “He’s not my wolf, and secondly, nope – I’m not going soft.”

“I never said you were going soft – heaven forbid,” Tegan said rolling her eyes at her friend’s attitude. “I said soft spot.”

“I defy you to find a soft spot on me anywhere,” Karina hissed back.

“Puppies,” Tegan said, shrugging.

“Puppies are different…”

“Kittens…”

“That’s not…”

“Koala bears…”

“Would you stop with the cute furry animals?” Karina hissed back, folding her arms, angling her chin down, and scowling in annoyance.

Tegan turned and motioned with both hands towards Vaughn. “Cute furry animal,” she said, raising her eyebrows in expectation and Karina squirmed in place.

“Not the point…”

“So is the bloody point,” Tegan said snorting a chuckle. “And now we’re agreed you have a soft spot for…”

“Not agreed at all,” Karina said, thumbing her nose at the thought of it.

“Who chased off after the wolf when he freefell over the waterfall?” Tegan demanded.

Karina’s mouth moved for a moment without making a sound. “That was me checking to see if all my troubles were over.”

“How so?”

“Well, if wolfie went splat then I had no mate to worry about killing,” she said, shrugging.

Tegan snorted a chuckle. “You are so lying your curvy butt off right now…”

“Am not!”

“Are too…”

“Look!” Karina wagged her witching finger at her friend again, but she’d gotten far enough to cut off the words she didn’t want to hear, but couldn’t come up with anything in her defense.

“See,” Tegan said, shrugging just one shoulder. “You can’t even come up with a lie.”

“Oh, and what about you?” Karina said, deciding that her friend was right – she couldn’t come up with anything, and that meant the only thing to do was to turn the tables on her friend and deflect.

“Huh?”

“With the alpha,” Karina said, smirking.

Tegan frowned. “We’re not talking about me, and you’re just deflecting,” she said, feeling somewhat guilty.

“Pot-kettle-make me tea,” Karina said. “Says the witch with a mate of her own. What’s the matter? Reality check too much to face, so you have to pick on me?”

“I’m not picking on you, and you left me back there with the alpha, without thought or consideration, when you went chasing off after your mate…”

“After a possibly dead or dying wolf…”

“And what was I supposed to do? I tried to solve the mystery of who spelled your mate…”

“Can you stop saying the M word?” Karina hissed.

“I will if you will,” Tegan said.

“Well, I have so you can.”

“Deal.”

“Good.”

The two stood facing each other, both frowning, both considering their next move, and neither one ready to move on. “So, you have a mate,” Tegan said, and Karina groaned as she rolled her eyes. “Betcha never expected that was how your day was gonna go when you got up this morning.”

“Ugh!”
