Chapter 9

“You mated a vampire before you married my grandfather?” Sadie’s hand shook as she waited for her grandmother to explain the bombshell she had just dropped. All this time she’d feared vampires because of what her grandmother had told her about them. But the truth was, there were good vampires out there, ones who could be mates to shifters. She wanted to be angry, wanted to shout at her grandmother, but instead she felt like she was caught in a swirling eddy of a vast river, being pulled under by confusion.

“I was eighteen, and deep into my heat. Christopher was passing through town and caught my scent. He pursued me into the forest. When he caught me, I changed back to human and, well… My fox wanted him as bad as I did. We mated in a wild frenzy—”

Did she just say that? “Oh geez, Grandma…”

“—and he took my blood. I knew instantly he was my mate. It made no sense, but somehow it happened. But he couldn’t stay with me. It wasn’t safe. The vampire who made him would have killed me, and him. So when my heat had passed, we said our goodbyes…” Her voice broke a little, but she continued. “I watched him walk away, into the brightest sunlight I had ever seen, and I couldn’t go with him. Have you seen your vampire in the sunlight?”

“Yes. He wasn’t affected by it. Is that part of the mating?”

“It is,” her grandmother confirmed.

Sadie held her breath, her throat so tight she wanted to cry. “How…” She choked a little. “How did you have the strength to let him go?”

Her grandmother’s breath sounded shaky, as though the memory pained her.

“I let him go because it was the only way to save him, and he knew leaving me was the only way to protect me. What we discovered about vampires who drink from shifter mates was valuable information, a secret that had to be kept at all costs. Many shifters and vampires don’t believe that our kinds should mix. Many cross-race pairs go into hiding. Others are…killed.”

“I can’t let Seamus go, Grandma. He’s my mate. I’m falling in love with him.”

Vera chuckled. “I’m not thrilled he’s a vampire—they bring so much trouble—but maybe your boy is right. Things are different today. Things are changing. Maybe there’s hope for you two. I’m glad you found a mate. It’s a gift many shifters go their whole lives never finding.”

“You should have seen him in the sunlight this morning. It was beautiful. He was beautiful.” Sadie glanced out the window. Seamus was still loading up the truck. “But I hate that I’ve put him in danger. The wolves are getting close again. We’re leaving the motel. Seamus doesn’t want us to stay in one place for long.”

“His instincts are good, then. You need to keep moving, and you must be careful. The Yampa pack is out for blood. Ulrich came here last night. The idiot tried to scare me. He wanted to know if you had returned home.
