Paige pulled through with everything, although she didn’t tell me about the dress. I made sure she went home with an incredibly generous bonus.

I waited in front of Canlis, keeping an eye out on the cars pulling up to the front valet area. My suit was fresh. I’d opted not to go full tux, but I was in Italian wool combed so light and soft that it sat on my frame like a whisper. My shirt was pressed but I’d left the collar open and the cuff links at home. The careful balance of dressed to seduce but without being obvious.

As I waited for Chloe, I kept my palms shoved in my pants pockets. I wanted to look casual and relaxed. Really, I was wiping my sweaty palms on the pocket liners. I needed this to go perfectly. Having time to wait meant having time to agonize that all my choices for the evening were the wrong ones.

A cab pulled up and Chloe stepped out.

My breath caught in my throat.

The dress was black and body hugging, the hem sitting at her knees. It had capped sleeves that seemed sweet until you took in how deep the vee in the front was. Chloe’s small breasts shone with the cut, perky and seemingly made for my palms. This human body of hers was radically different from the exceptionally curvy Persephone, but it appealed to me all the same.

Her blonde hair was swept to the side and tucked behind one ear. When she saw me waiting, she gave me a tentative smile.

I moved to greet her. “You look ravishing,” I said, and meant it. My mind was in danger of becoming fully devoted to images of ravishing Chloe at that moment. Everything so far was happening as I’d imagined. I leaned in and pressed a kiss to her cheek.

Chloe jerked back, skittering away from me like a disturbed fawn. She eyed me warily. I swallowed hard, suddenly scared of the misstep.

“I’m sorry. It was an innocent gesture.” Very common where you and I come from, I wanted to add.

Chloe’s nose wrinkled in the most adorable way. “Okay. But consent is kind of important. It’s considered polite to not make moves on someone you aren’t familiar with.”

There were so many things I wanted to say. That a cheek kiss was far from putting on moves. I’d moved inside of Persephone before and it had been very, very consensual. As for familiar, she was my wife. It was hard to remember that she didn’t recall who she was and how well I knew her.

I held up my hands in surrender. “Again, I’m sorry. Are you still interested in dinner and talking business?”

Chloe tilted her head, a hand on a generous hip. “This is a business date? Because this dress seems a bit extra.” She blushed prettily. “But I love it. Thank you.”

“It looks good on you. And I’m your primary investor,” I reminded her. “Tax write-off, remember?”

She huffed a bit, but I saw how she tried to hide her smile.
