Semi-ripe or semi-hardwood cuttings are taken, as their name suggests, from slightly older growth. Their stems are just beginning to harden at the base, while the tips of the shoots are soft. They are best taken from midsummer through to the end of summer.

The method for taking the cuttings is the same for all types, except that they vary in length and the way you prepare them.

TAKING CUTTINGS

Never take more cuttings than you can deal with in one session, or they will wilt completely before you can get them potted up. Keep cuttings moist and in the shade until you can prepare them.

Always use a sharp, clean knife to take cuttings. Cut off a healthy-looking non-flowering side shoot.
