THE CROSSROADS OF TODAY’S CHOICES

If we take these texts as true, real, and universal possibilities, then the warnings of judgment cannot be presumed as foregone, conclusive descriptions of what must be. Rather, they stand as portents of a path that no one ought to pursue alongside an assurance that God’s love gets the last word. As Rahner says, the NT passages that present an either/or dualism are to be read from the crossroads of today’s choices, not as a preview or report of what’s to come:

Insofar as it is a report, it is rather a disclosure of the situation in which the persons addressed are actually found. They are placed before a decision in which the consequences are irrevocable. They can be lost forever if they reject God’s offer of salvation. . . . We must maintain side by side, and unwaveringly the truth of the omnipotence of the universal salvific will of God, the redemption of all by Christ, the duty of all men to hope for salvation and also the true possibility of eternal loss. . . . [T]he emphasis on the possibility of hell as perpetual obduracy must be paralleled by insistent encouragement to rely with confidence on the infinite mercy of God.1
