Chapter 9

Two weeks later, Beau was still dying to know what Lucky wanted to tell him this whole time. She kept avoiding the issue whenever he brought it up. What was she going to tell him? And why did she stop? Was she hiding something from him? The curiosity nagged away at him every day for the past couple weeks.

But man, had they spent the most amazing two weeks together. He’d risen early in the mornings, as usual, to start feeding the cattle and she’d come out with him to give him a hand.

It made his mornings so much brighter. They watched the sunrise together and the sunsets. He was beginning to enjoy Lucky’s company.

But still, he couldn’t get close to anyone. And she wasn’t the only one keeping something a secret. Well, he didn’t exactly have a secret, but he had a rule that he wasn’t going to fall in love again or get too close to another woman, not after his wife’s death.

Right now, Beau was on his way to the feed store in town and Lucky wanted to come with him, so he took her along for the ride. He remembered last week when one of the church sisters, Miriam, asked if they were a couple when they were spotted together in the town. He watched Lucky’s expression and saw her cheeks redden. Was she feeling something for him? Still, they both brushed off the comment and told Sister Mariam, they were just friends.

He kept his eyes on the road, driving and told her, “You’ve really got a handle on working on the ranch.” His compliment was from the heart.

She’d asked many times to be of help and he wanted her to just chill and relax. He knew she was working on her blog, but she’d insisted, she wanted to get away from her computer and take a break, do something more adventurous to give her some exciting entries.

So Beau showed Lucky how to collect eggs from the hen house. Her sister, Josie, and she were so jovial and loved watching and learning. They seemed to be naturals on the ranch.

“You guys make it so easy,” she said, looking out the passenger side window, “It’s wonderful here. I feel like I’m in a different world.” Her gaze then fell to Beau.

He smiled.

“It’s so peaceful and serene,” she continued. “I love watching the cattle and the horses and listening to the wind through the tree leaves. You don’t get that in the city.”

“You sure don’t.”

“No wonder you like to be out here.”

“Wouldn’t trade it for anything else in the world,” he agreed with her.

Just then he fantasized about them being a couple and working together on the ranch. They spent a few evenings at the main house with the rest of the family and everyone seemed to take to Lucky as well.

She was like a breath of fresh country air.

It seemed as if luck was on his side right now. But he had something to ask her, and he didn’t know if his luck would run out with Lucky if he did.
