Greta used the paint roller, enjoying the rhythmic up-and-down motions as she added a coat of that pretty shade of blue to the walls. But her mind was preoccupied with thoughts of what Noah had told her. She hadn’t realized Debra’s health had gotten so fragile—she should have paid better attention to her at quilting circle on Monday.

And she definitely should have talked to Sara before now. In fact, despite what Noah had told her, she should have tracked Sara down last Sunday and spoken to her then. It wasn’t like her to put things off.

What was happening to her?

Noah was working on the wall adjacent to hers. There was a different feeling today. Rather than the easy back-and-forth of yesterday, Noah seemed lost in thought, rarely speaking except in response to something she said. And there was an undercurrent of tension in him that hadn’t been there yesterday.

Was it because of his concern over the short time until Maisie moved on, or was something else on his mind?

Whatever the case, she needed to get some answers from Sara so that he could make plans, one way or the other.

Though Greta knew the wall of silence between them was more contemplative than troubled, she couldn’t seem to break through. When they finally finished the painting, she quickly gathered her things and headed down to the quilt shop.

As soon as she and Esther exchanged greetings, she put in her request. “I hate to ask you to cover for me yet again, but I’d like to leave a little early today to run an errand.”

Her friend gave her an arch look. “Would this errand have anything to do with your matchmaking efforts?”

Greta turned to wipe at the counter with a cloth. “Perhaps.”

Esther raised her hands, palms outward. “Say no more. I’ll be glad to do my part to support you and Noah.”

Greta glanced up, trying to read Esther’s expression. There was something about the way she’d said that last bit that seemed to carry a double meaning. But Esther had already moved to her quilt frame with a perfectly innocent expression. In fact she was humming softly to herself.
