Bethany woke to a blinding headache and Aaron peering down at her, shaking her shoulder, begging her to open her eyes.
Why did her left arm hurt so badly? She turned her head, her eyes widening as she saw that it was swollen and turned at a strange direction. She promptly turned her head the other direction and threw up.
âHey. Look at me, Bethany. Youâre okay. Do you hear me?â
Aaron was kneeling beside her now, pulling back her kapp strings, placing a reassuring hand on her back. âDonât look at your arm. Look at me, Beth.â
Hearing her pet name, the name that only her family ever used, brought her attention back to Aaron. She turned her face toward him, met his gaze, and realized that the Aaron she knew and cared for was back. There wasnât a trace of anger or resentment in his eyes, though there was a good amount of fear.
Was she that badly hurt?
She checked her other arm, her legs, even patted her chest. When her fingertips went to her forehead, he stopped her. âDonât touch it.â
âIs it that bad?â
âBad enough.â He glanced toward the top of the ravine. âCan you get back to the top, with my help?â
âI think so.â She managed to sit up by putting her good arm around his shoulders, but standing was impossible. When she tried, the world tilted precariously. The tilting turned to spinning, which caused her to turn her head, afraid she would vomit again.
âOkay. Look. I think you have a concussion, and your arm is...â
âBroken.â
âRight. Iâm going to have to go for help.â
Bethany Yoder was not afraid of the approaching darkness. She wasnât afraid of the ravine either, but suddenly she was very afraid of being alone. She reached for Aaron, clutched his arm, and he moved closer. He let her rest her head against his chest. Without warning, she began sobbing into his shirt.
âHey, hey, hey. Weâll be laughing about this before you know it.â
âYa?â
âSure. Iâll tease you about the time I found you lying in the mud.â
âIt really h-hur-hurts.â
âIâm sure it does. Thatâs why I have to go for help.â He kissed her forehead, let his lips linger there. His voice was soft, tender even. âIâll be back in five minutes.â
She nodded miserably, and then he was gone.
Bethany sat there in the dark trying to remember what had happened and more than a little grateful that she couldnât. The pain in her arm was unlike anything sheâd ever felt before. The angle of her arm had been all wrong, and the swelling had caused it to look hideous...how long had she been down here? Her teeth continued to chatter together, and she realized she was in shock.
She needed to focus, keep herself together until Aaron returned.
But how?
She swiped at the tears running down her cheeks. Her fingers came away red. The blood must be coming from the wound on her head, but Aaron had said not to touch it. She pulled in a very deep, long breath and tried to think of something else, anything else.
