Start by working the blade section of the butter knife with the straight knife. Using the scissor cut, start thinning out the shape by keeping the blade of your cutting knife flat to the surface. This will allow you to remove thin slivers of waste material.

Now start working on the join between the blade and the shoulders of the butter knife as it transitions into the handle. Use the push cut to create short curls as you start to define the curves of the shoulders.

When you have removed enough waste material you can start refining the shape of the handle using the detail cut. To do this, work slowly from the shoulders down to the end of the handle, concentrating on producing a comfortable shape that sits well in the hand.
