Dealing with Death

The gospel message promises eternal life, meaning a transformed “now” as well as a glorious “hereafter.” Death has been defeated by Christ. Very different is the vision set forth by the Stoic writer Epictetus, which does not so much face death as deny it: A-9.

When you see a person weeping in sorrow for a child gone abroad or dead, or for loss of his property, take care that the appearances do not carry you away, as if he were suffering in external things. Make a distinction in your own mind and say, “It is not what happened that afflicts this man, but it is the opinion about that thing that afflicts the man.” So far as words, then, do not be unwilling to show him sympathy, and even to lament with him. But take care that you do not lament in your inner being also.
