Clint extended a hand to Sara and bowed.

“May I have the pleasure of this dance?” Her laugh made him feel less silly. Steven’s smile helped too. Even with the earlier mess, their first real date in ages was turning out well.

On the dance floor, Sara wrapped her arms around him. “How’s your energy holding up, cowboy?”

A slow smile spread across his face, and he nuzzled her neck in response. They needed to get out more often, especially when he felt human in between treatments. They were halfway through with chemo. Almost done.

“Think your parents will be waiting up for us?” Sara’s voice tickled his ear as they danced. His parents had better be fast asleep.

“It won’t matter if they are or not. Our bedroom door has a lock.”

Sara shook her head and grinned.

“What’s the joke, you two?” Steven and Gracie slow-danced close beside them.

“Nothing you won’t figure out in a few months.”

Sara swatted him.

Steven bit back a guffaw, and Gracie blushed deep red. Clint couldn’t help but laugh.

“You need to rein it in a little, don’t you think?” Sara’s voice was soft in his ear as Steven and Gracie moved away. “They were both married before. Waiting for their wedding day can’t be easy.”

He hadn’t thought of that. “You’re right. I should’ve kept quiet.” He pulled her close, and they danced awhile without speaking.

“What are you thinking?” Sara tilted her head. “You sort of disappeared for a minute there.”

“I’m thinking that between my lousy memory and chronic exhaustion, I’m a miserable candidate for best man.”

She kissed his cheek. “You’re the only best man for Steven. He knows you’ve had a lot going on, honey. He understands.”

“And how do you know what Steven’s thinking?” Clint pulled back to stare into his wife’s beautiful eyes. He knew she had amazing intuitive powers, but this was a bit much for her to just decode from body language.

“I have my sources.”

He shook his head. “You ladies talk about far too much, you know.”

“Be thankful I have friends. Or else I’d be talking your ears off nonstop.”

He pulled her closer and bent down to kiss her earlobe. “Just be kind when you’re discussing us males. We have fragile egos, you know.”

“I wouldn’t say anything unkind about you.”

“You’ve talked to Gracie about my outbursts, haven’t you?”

“A little. But it’s not like I’m trashing you, Clint.” Her eyes held his attention. “I love you, and I don’t want to snap back. So, yes, I have called Gracie to help me get my feelings under control and to pray. She’s an amazing pray-er.”

He looked over Sara’s head and found his partner and Gracie wrapped in their own intimate conversation. He had to agree with Sara’s assessment. He’d heard Gracie pray for them and for her students and Steven.

A man about his age, a little shorter with a distinct military walk, caught his attention. I used to walk like that.

Sara snuggled against his chest away from his port. The deformity didn’t cause him as much self-loathing anymore, but in some situations it still bugged him.
