Chapter Ten
Carly
If I could burrow under the covers and never come out again, I would. Iâd kissed him. Practically attacked him. Iâd thrown myself at him like I was starving. What was wrong with me?
I groaned and pulled my blankets up to my chin and stared up at the ceiling. My crazed actions had to be due to my day. Katâs engagement and wedding planning, and then Darylâs out of the blue call.
I rolled over and looked at my cell phone that was sitting on the edge of my night stand. What did he want? There was only one way to find out, but did I care enough to call him?
No. No, I didnât. Iâd thought I was in love with him. Thinking back on it, it was more the idea of getting to go to New York Iâd fallen in love with. New York. Yet another thing I had to think about. Did I really want to leave Hawaii?
Iâd had dreams of leaving, of attending Julliard, and opening my own recording studio, but that was years ago. Theyâd been squashed when my grandmother got sick. Iâd given it all up to help her. How could I not? She and my grandpa were there for me and loved me unconditionally.
I sighed and then flipped back to my back. My belly rumbled. Iâd never eaten dinner. How could I after making such a fool of myself? How was I going to face Leo? Itâs not like I could avoid him forever. He was living here.
My stomach rumbled again. Food. I should probably eat something. My gaze went to my phone. I snatched it off the end table and looked at the time. It was just after nine.
Leo might be asleep. I held my breath and listened. The house was quiet. Now. Iâd turned the music on earlier while I cleaned out my closet and bedroom, hoping it would deter him from coming to check on me. It had worked.
My heart fell at the reminder of just how well it had worked. Iâd shoved him away and ran. Literally. Of course, he wasnât going to come chasing after me.
The house was quiet now. I waited a few more moments. Satisfied that Leo was snoozing away in his bed, I climbed out of bed and tiptoed over the hardwood to my door. The door creaked as I opened it, making me wince.
I waited a few seconds. When nothing stirred, I made my way across the hall and to the stairs. I gripped the handrail and moved down them lightly. I let out a relieved breath when I hit the last step and headed to the kitchen.
I flipped on the light and went straight for the fridge. There was a box of pizza in there from the other night. I opened it and pulled out a few slices, throwing them on a plate and then putting them in the microwave.
While that heated up, I went to the fridge and grabbed a can of Coke.
