“Where are we going?” I ask Morpheus as we walk side by side after school.

“I don’t want interruptions, and since Rosie is bunking with you, there’s only one place we can go.”

“The treehouse,” I say.

“Yeah.”

“How come no other student goes there? It’s not that hard to find.”

“I think that by hanging out with us, you have forgotten who we are,” Morpheus replies with a twinkle in his eyes.

I roll mine. “Oh, yeah. The Magnificent Four. I totally forgot about that.”

“You’re the only person here who was never impressed by our status.”

“True. Terrified, sure, but not impressed.” I smirk.

We cross into the clearing where the treehouse is. “Who built this?” I ask.

“We did, actually. Well, not us exactly. We hired builders.”

“And Principal Fallon approved it just like that?”

“She didn’t know until it was a done deal. But she didn’t care, as long as we didn’t create problems for her.”

We stop in front of the oak tree, and I take a moment to admire the beauty of its massive branches and intricate patterns on the trunk.

“Ladies first,” Morpheus says with a cheeky smile.

“Ha-ha. How chivalrous. You just want to look up my skirt.”

He widens his eyes, portraying the perfect picture of innocence. But he can’t hide the mirth in his gaze. “I would never.”

“Whatever. You go first.”

Like I’d mind if he did look up my skirt, and that’s the problem. My stomach is already in knots, and a shiver of anticipation runs down my back. We’ll be alone again for the first time since we kissed in his car, and I’m already craving more. But I can’t let my mind stray to the gutter. He’s here to train me, not satiate my hunger.

The first detail I notice when I emerge from the trapdoor is the gray film of dust covering everything. “Did the cleaning person go on vacation?” I ask.

“We usually tidy the place up ourselves.” Morpheus grabs a pillow from one of the bean bags and gives it a couple of smacks, releasing dust particles everywhere. It’s only after a moment that he notices I’m staring at him with my mouth open.

“What?” he asks.

“You expect me to believe you guys clean this place yourselves?”

“We don’t want anyone snooping around, so yeah. Why are you looking at me like that?”

I shake my head and laugh. “It’s just surreal to think you would do something so menial. I thought labor work was beneath Idols.”

“Most of the time, yes. Come to think of it, I’m the one who does most of the work manually. Rufio simply destroys everything he doesn’t want to deal with, and Phoenix uses his telekinesis to straighten shit up like a damn fairy godmother.”

The picture of Phoenix wearing a fairy godmother outfit with translucent wings and everything pops in my head. I can’t help but laugh.

“What about Bryce?” I ask once I’ve calmed down.

“He rarely comes here.”

“Well, I can help. Do you have a rag I can use to dust?”

“No, we’re not wasting our time with that. Let’s get down to business.
