15 to 20 blackberry canes of similar lengths, 12 to 36 inches (30 to 90 cm), with berries attached

Fill a large, crock-style vase with cold, clean water. Wearing gardening gloves, place the cut branches on top of each other on your work surface, forming a bunch. You want a mixture of berry colors, so intersperse the branches with ripe berries among those that are unripe. This arrangement looks best when the blackberry branches cascade over the edge of the vessel, so make sure the branches are long enough to drape. With one hand, grab the whole bunch and cut the ends uniformly. Remove any leaves that might fall below the water line.

Place the bunch in a vase all at once, making sure that all the stems are in the water. It should also look very full and lush. If it does not, remove the whole bunch from the vase and add more branches (it is difficult to add or remove branches individually from the vase because they get tangled up in the thorns).
