Peace and prosperity under Jeroboam II

The kingdom of Israel reached a peak of political importance and prosperity under King Jeroboam II (782-753 BC). Although little is said in 2 Kings about Jeroboam, references in the book of Amos combined with implications drawn from the Samaria ostraca suggest that the time of Jeroboam II was one of economic prosperity as well as geographical expansion.

Judah also saw a revival of political, military, and economic power under Azariah/Uzziah, who launched a campaign against the Philistines (2 Chron 26.6) and established strong points in the territory of Ashdod and elsewhere on the coastal plain. His control of the trade routes from Arabia and Sinai was secured by the restoration of Elath after his father died (2 Kings 14.22); thus, he received tribute from the Arabs and also the Meunites (2 Chron 26.7).
