CHAPTER 9

DEALING WITH JEALOUSY

Sunday was spent working on my house. It was really starting to come together, but was definitely taking a whole lot more time than I had anticipated. It’s a whole lot slower to pull together, working on it part-time, than when you are doing it as a full-time project. There were a number of factors involved in that. I was using barter labour. That is, my mates would come and help me do stuff one weekend and then, the following weekend or after hours, I’d be at their place re-paying them, in kind, for the labour they had given me. So I wasn’t really just building one house, as a lot of my mates were building their own homes. There were no credit ledgers in place. You just knew when you’d paid off a debt. What was beneficial to me was, I knew exactly how much labour cost, unlike some of my other tradie friends. At times, mates would promise to come out on a Sunday and then they just don’t show. I can hardly blame them. When they’ve already been working six days doing what they are paid to do, the last thing they want to do is do the same bloody thing on their only day off. I might have to bite the bullet and pay some people to do some of the work. I really couldn’t rely on friends to do, but my only concern was the level of quality on the job when I wasn’t around to supervise the progress.

I was the first month into a new construction project and the big boss turned up on the door. He asked me how things were going and I said they were pretty good. I had a good crew and we were working well together and ahead of schedule as a result. He said, ‘Craig, I have a bit of news I want to share with you. Firstly, I need Betty for a while on another project. It’s getting behind and she really is a cracker at getting and keeping a project on track’. I couldn’t argue with his logic, but I said, ‘I will only agree if it’s temporary and not permanent’. The boss looked at me, surprised by the firmness in my voice, and at one of his staff telling him how to do things. I’m not known for being hard-arsed, but I knew that a lot of the success I was enjoying was due to Betty. I was used to her being around. I didn’t have to do as much checking and validation of sub-contractors and suppliers, for the last two years we’d been working together. I don’t think I wanted to admit it but, I might actually miss her. We were spending more and more time together, just because we worked such long hours on the job. I spent more time with Betty than any other member of my family and my last girlfriend had actually accused me of having an affair with her.
