Meaning
Zechariah heralds a king (v. 9) who will bring peace to the nations and enjoy a universal reign (v. 10). This coming deliverer of Judah is both righteous and humble (v. 9). Although he does not use the term âmessiahâ, Zechariah stands in the tradition of the OT prophets who announced a restored Davidic kingship (cf. Isa. 9:6â7; 11:1; Amos 9:11). The NT writers recognized Zechariahâs numerous predictions about the Messiah as fulfilled in the life and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth.25
