The full programme of visits, ceremonial, training, flag showing and intensive amphibious work in testing conditions continued with the visit by Lord Mountbatten, a steam past the retiring First Sea Lord, Admiral of the Fleet Sir Edward Ashmore, an amphibious exercise – FOREST VENTURE – off the west coast of Scotland with 3 Commando Brigade, Royal Marines which also included landings across Saunton Sands, before a final docking in Plymouth on 15 July.

Captain Lionel Bird’s time in command was over on 24 August; marked by the emotional farewell from his ship’s company of which he was so proud. His last words were:

On return from the Falklands, the Queen’s Harbour Master at Portsmouth, Captain James Weatherall, invited me to join him in his barge when he went out to lead her into her berth; a brave sight, though without one LCM and all her gallant crew. One proudly shed a final tear.
