Some writers find these ideas of Barth quite inadequate. John Wimber, in his book Power Healing, provides a moving personal document of the effect of dispensationalism on many conservative Christians. The popular Scofield Reference Bible promoted this point of view, which became dogma with many Bible students and in many Bible colleges. Wimber also reveals how the orthodox Christian idea of God’s love involves what one does about a healing ministry.

Bultmann puts the case against healing somewhat more bluntly for liberal and existential theology. He questions the reality of the healing experiences contained in the New Testament. They are examples of myth, that he describes as the breaking through of a more than physical order into the physical world. Such impossibilities must be eliminated from the New Testament narrative if Christians are to get on with the task of authentic living in the here and now. Speaking about actual experience of the Holy Spirit and how it fitted into this system, he said to a friend: “In my entire life I have never been able to get to first base so far as the Holy Ghost is concerned” (“Ich habe in meinem ganzen Leben mit dem Heiligen Geist nichts anfangen können”).26 Barth said miracles of healing don’t happen any more; Bultmann maintained that they didn’t happen in the New Testament either. Even the magnificent and influential Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote, in Letters from Prison, that since human beings have come of age and can understand and manage the physical world so efficiently, they no longer need a God who works directly in the physical world to help them in their helplessness. I have seen nothing significant on the healing ministry written by process theologians. In spite of all this, individual Christians throughout the ages have attested to the healing power of God. This is true of nearly every age and every part of the splintered church. Let us look at the evidence.
