Chapter 22 - Team Action

Spartan's Viewpoint

The new girl took off on her flying cycle after the alien named Zarvahn. The fans blasted down air at us for a few moments as she ascended into the sky after the alien. I wasn't sure how she hoped to help against a pair of starships, but I silently wished her luck regardless.

The Gahranii warship succeeded in blasting pieces off the smaller ship in front of it, and we saw a wing careen through the mile of air down to the city. I grimaced at the thought of the damage it would cause.

The smaller craft, under the heavy barrage, lost more chunks, and had a trail of smoke after it.

Razorwing said, "It looks like it's going down, their crew seems to be jumping down."

I asked, "They are just leaping out?"

"Right. They look a lot like bricks; perhaps they are tough enough to take a fall from a mile up."

The warship lurched, and the glowing engines in back cut out. It began rapidly falling.

Razorwing said, "One of the big aliens just burst out an airlock. Somehow, he got inside their ship."

It became hard to see as it went down on the far eastern side of the city, but appeared that it might crash as well. One of the Gahranii from behind Stephanie's house jogged around the side.

He said, "Our warship shot down the Kurcet scout ship on the east side of this city. One of them boarded our craft and damaged the power source. We will take our ship, cross the city, and guard the remains of the other ship. Rittar will stay here on the chance our nobles return."

I asked, "It looks like they abandoned their ship, any idea why?"

"The Kurcet are extremely powerful combatants. They are much like you, very large and among the strongest beings we have ever encountered. I believe they will split up, and attempt to attack us here, one or two will attack our warship, another one or two will salvage their wreckage. Another one or two may continue after any targets of obvious importance in the city."

"Why would they go after you?"

"Our species are not on friendly terms. In fact, our new warship that you just saw was built because of marauding beings such as the Kurcet. It is safer to destroy their ship than to face them in person."

"So what would they have done here?"

"Capture or destroy our ship, kill our nobles. They would likely wish to prevent any alliance on the part of our species. With the damage to their own ship, they may seek to capture one of ours."

"Oh. Any tips on fighting them?"

"Stay at a distance, you cannot hope to match them in melee combat. Use attacks that do not need to puncture skin, apart from the talons of the darkburned here." He looked at Razorwing, so I assumed that term was used for either demon type people, or for mutants.

"You mean Razorwing?" I pointed at the demonic-looking hero.

"Yes."

"So his talons could hurt these
