The flowers are yellow but can be variable across populations with whites, violets and pinks also seen. They appear as buds in mid December and then open usually in January in the UK.

The flowers are on stalks (pedicels) held above the plants succulent leaves. The fruit capsules have ten to 15 chambers and take some time to ripen.

This plant lives in the arid regions just east of the western rim of the great escarpment. This is slightly east of an area known as the Hardveld. The Hardveld is an area of semi mountainous granite domes which has its own unique vegetation.

The plants grow on quartz gravel flats in Bushmanland and to some extent Namaqualand. The rainfall there is only 125 mm per annum. It is fairly arid.

Ihlenfeldtia can take extremes of temperature and cold (from experience) which suggests that there may be significant frosts there in the winter. They are tough little plants.
