Bottom heat can speed the rooting process for stem cuttings, especially when air temperatures are cool. Remember, raising the soil temperature will cause soil to dry out more quickly, so pay special attention to maintaining elevated humidity if you use a heat mat.

Check your cuttings after two weeks. Tug gently on the top of one; if it pulls out of the mix, firm it back in place and continue to wait. If you meet with some resistance, roots have started to grow. Continue to keep the cuttings in elevated humidity. When you see signs of new top growth, you can remove the cuttings from their shelter and treat them as individual plants. This process can take anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks, depending on the plant.
