Framing, Siding & Roofing
Wood is the primary material used in building sheds. For structural members like wall studs and rafters, use construction-grade SPF (spruce, pine, or fir). While most houses are built with 2 × 4 or 2 × 6 wall studs, sheds normally can be built with lighter and slightly cheaper 2 × 3 studs, although only larger building centers and lumberyards stock 2 × 3. Rafters, beams, ridge poles, and floor joists typically are fashioned with 2 × 6 lumber. Floor joists, wood posts, and any wood shed parts that will be in contact with the ground must be made from pressure-treated lumber.
Plywood and Oriented Strand Board (OSB) are often used for roof and siding sheathing, and exterior-rated plywood may be used for siding and floors. Exterior-rated sheet stock, often with a textured finish or beading, can be used for siding that requires no backer panel of sheathing. Wood, in the forms of lap siding, shakes and other engineered products, is used for siding and roofing as well. Western red cedar is popular because of its natural resistance to insects and decay, as well as its visual appeal. Pine, fir, and hemlock are also good choices, provided that you plan to paint the shed. Other siding options include log-cabin siding, board-and-batten siding, and fiber-cementboard siding.
Roofing materials are often not included in shed kits, so you can choose standard or scalloped cedar or asphalt shingles, brightly colored corrugated metal, slate, clay tile, or even copper. If you use a heavy material on the roof, such as clay tile or slate, be sure that the framing and foundation will support the weight.
