Chapter 3

Now, let’s talk about site. What are some things that you should keep in mind when you’re choosing the site that you want to have? What should you know? Well, there are a few things that you will want to do before you even plan the site of the greenhouse, and this chapter will discuss a few of these things, and what you should definitely watch out for.

Take a Look Around at the Place

What you first want to do, is take a look at the place where you want to put your greenhouse. This is the biggest step, since this is often an overlooked step, but it can play a huge part in the success of the greenhouse.

You want a place that’s got good sun both in the winter and the summer, and you want to make sure that both of these times of the year have them. You also should watch out for trees and buildings.

This also is a factor in the summer and winter as well. some trees might be barren in the winter and give you a ton of sun, but then during the summer it’s completely masked by a whole slew of trees, causing a reduction of sunlight. You want to make sure that your greenhouse gets enough sun, both when the shortest day of the year happens, and the longest day.

Also, as a rule of thumb, the closer you get to the shortest day, the decrease of the angle of the sun, so keep that in mind.

Drains Well

Once you’ve found a spot, you should make sure that you’ve chosen a place that has decent soil, and also one that drains well. If you have a place that drains well, it’ll make your life a lot easier.

But, if you use soil directly from the garden that drains well as well, you certainly will have an even better time. You definitely want to make sure that you have rich soil as well, since it’ll prevent disease that could come into contact with the plants.

You should test your soil for acidity before you begin planning, since this is something that will help you. You should also make sure that you don’t have any disease in the soil as well, along with any other pests that could otherwise pose a problem.

If you do have a site that’s perfect, but it doesn’t drain well, it’s up to you to drain it. You should make sure that the spot doesn’t have a lot of winds near it as well, since that will increase the heat loss. You should definitely test out the drainage and dig holes and the like to help with this as needed before you do put it up.

Easy to Get to

You also want your site easy to get to. It’s a nightmare when it’s the bitter cold of winter and you have to walk halfway into your backyard to get to your greenhouse. Plus, you’re not going to want to use it as much if you have it far away.
