Chapter Ten

Heath

Me: Are you headed out tonight?

Devney: If I can get through this meeting. We had a few emergencies.

Me: Okay. Just let me know if you need anything.

Not that I could actually help her with her job. I had no idea how to work in PR. But she was brilliant. And I loved seeing her work while sitting on my couch, typing away at things. I had been going through a few things for work too, but it felt different; I was just a bar owner. She was brilliant.

But I had to remember that I was supposed to be the initial fake date. The good time.

I wasn’t allowed to want more.

Me: We are headed to dinner tonight, the guys and me. Ace is coming too, since we are letting our staff close tonight.

Devney: Look at you, growing up and being the big boss.

Me: Yes, let’s not talk about it, because it’s kind of stressing me out.

I trusted our team. We had hired them, trained them, I knew they could handle it, but Ace and I loved our baby bar, and tended to work too many hours. But we were practicing giving more time to the rest of our staff because with the wedding coming up, we would be taking off for a few days.

We needed to make sure we were ready.

And not work sixty-hour weeks again.

Devney: We’ll come see you later tonight, depending on our girls’ night. Would it be weird if all of us showed up?

I knew what she was asking, and while I didn’t care, I had to see if my brother would.

Me: I’m glad Paisley has you. I’ll ask my brother if it’s a problem. It shouldn’t be but I don’t want anyone to feel awkward.

Devney: It’s just an odd coincidence and I don’t want anyone to feel awkward, either. But we’ll figure it out.

Me: Yeah, we will. I’m off. Don’t work too hard.

Devney: I could say the same to you.

I smiled and ran my hand through my hair.

Then I picked up the phone and called my brother. August picked up on the first ring.

“Hey, am I running late? I thought I had an hour until we were meeting at your bar.”

“No, I just have a question.”

“Hit me.”

I was silent for long enough, that August cursed under his breath.

“She’s going to be there tonight, isn’t she?”

I pinched the bridge of my nose. I was glad I hadn’t done a video call. I loved my twin. But sometimes he could read my mind better than I could read his.

“She’s Devney’s boss. And they’re becoming friends. I am sort of under the impression that when Paisley moved out here, she didn’t have a lot of friends and was starting over. Like we are.”

August cursed. “Damn it. Yeah, I can see that. She’s really good at focusing on one thing and making sure it works. I’ll get over it. Denver’s a big city, but with you dating her friend, I can’t really avoid her forever. It would be good to meet up at your place.
