Doing something uncomfortable is where growth, change, and connection can take place.
Any situation, whether you act or not, can inform future situations. Being mindful of this for the next time counts. Being mindful of the patterns of a given situation also matters. Taking responsibility for similar situations that do in fact involve you is even better. Interestingly, if you do act by intervening, delegating someone else to do something, or something similar, others are far more likely to act as well. Others may be inspired to intervene next time, change their own behaviors, or take notice and claim responsibility in the next similar situation.
In a training for trainers program, Stop the Hate! Fighting Bias and Hate Crimes on Campus, we learned that acts of violence might be directed at individuals, institutions, or entire communities. Community violence has a direct impact on individuals, and violence directed at individuals also affects the community. Any act of intervention can lead to real lived experiences changing for the individuals involved and potentially on an even larger scale. Bias, both positive and negative, can lead to prejudices, which can develop into hatred and acts of violence. These acts don’t have to be criminal to be powerful. Just like our acts of trying don’t have to be lethal to be effective. If we were to take known war crimes from history (or present day for that matter) for example, what would have happened if someone had intervened early on before ideas grew into movements that affected millions of people? Interestingly, intervening with others is often easier than intervening in our own behavioral patterns, but these patterns can be just as powerful.
