Oh, no you’re not!” Grace protests. “You are not there. You are not anywhere near there. I did some research last night. Ebbets Field is on the other side of Brooklyn. That isn’t part of our plan at all.”
“Honestly, Matt, how are you going to get there and get back in time?” Luis adds.
“It’s better than sitting here and just waiting,” I reply. “Maybe I can persuade Grandpa to come back to the party early.”
“Think about it, Matt,” Luis says. “One, you’ve got to get to a stadium you have no idea how to get to. Two, you have to find a teenage version of your grandfather inside this crowded stadium. Three, you need to somehow get him to agree to head back here with you, and oh yeah, one more little thing. Four, he has NO IDEA WHO YOU ARE!”
“You don’t have to yell, Luis,” I say. “I don’t know how, but I’ll find a way to make it work.”
“Matt, please,” Grace says softly. “We know he’s coming here. If he gets here by six we have fifteen minutes to work with. I know it’s not a lot of time, but we know he’s coming. What if you don’t get back in time? What if Luis and I are stuck here waiting for you while you have The Book of Memories?”
I take the book from my back pocket. This, at least, is an easy fix.
“You hold on to the book,” I tell Grace as I hand her the book. “I am not giving up a chance to see Ebbets Field! Duke Snider. Roy Campanella. JACKIE ROBINSON! Not to mention the greatest sports fans to ever cram into a stadium. It’s the stuff of legend. A field of dreams. Baseball is my life, Grace. If I don’t get back in time, you can head home without me. I’ll be fine here.”
“Okay, still, even if that’s what you want to do, will you consider that there’s no way for you to actually do it?” Luis reminds me. “You’ve never been alone in a city; how are you going to do it in 1951? Think about it. You can’t look up train schedules on the Internet. You can’t grab a ticket to the game online. It’s just impossible.”
“I have to find a way,” I reply. “I’ll never forgive myself if I don’t get there.”
“Don’t get where?” Uncle Alex interrupts.
I will admit that thinking that Uncle Alex may have heard even the teensiest bit of our conversation about life in the future sends my heart racing again. But I’m not ready to give up the dream yet.
“Ebbets Field,” I tell him. “When you said that Joe was at the game, it reminded me that it’s one thing I’d like to do before I go back.”
“Go back where?” Uncle Alex asks.
“Um . . . Buffalo,” I say, spying a painting of a herd of buffalo in the living room. “You know, we just came down for the fireworks, I don’t know when we’ll get down here again, and I’m not even sure if we’ll get to see any fireworks in this mist.
