When Thomas rejects with Augustine the “merit” of the first grace, he is thinking of merit in the fullest sense, condign merit. See the discussion of Thomas’s position in the Scriptum on the possibility of “meriting” justifying grace. I shall argue shortly in the text that Thomas’s retention of the facere quod in se est in De Veritate in the sense advanced by the Scriptum makes it most probable that he considers in De Veritate the autonomous action of the sinner done to please God congruently meritorious.
