Study Guide for Chapter 10

How Should the Church Raise Its Money?

Summary

Every church needs money to run its internal and external affairs, and the primary source of that money will be its own members. Scripture focuses more on our heart attitudes toward money, yet it still guides the church on how to raise the money it needs, specifically through tithes and offerings. Churches can also lawfully use their facilities to generate income for their God-given mission. In all this, the spirituality of the church and its members should be of first priority.

Study Questions

1. Does the abuse of money that the author describes here show itself in your cultural context? Can you think of a specific example?

2. According to 2 Corinthians 9:7, our giving should be done willingly and cheerfully. Is this different from giving “when you feel like it”? How so?

How do you think this principle of cheerful willingness relates to the principle of giving regularly to meet the regular needs of the church?

3. The story of the widow (Luke 21:1–4) is at times used to tell people to give all they have. How do you think this relates to 2 Corinthians 8:12, “according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have”?

4. The author shows that the teaching of “sowing seeds” treats God “like a banker who promises huge interests on any money that his people give to the church”. What, in your experience, has been the harm caused by the teaching of “sowing seeds”? How can you show from the Bible that this teaching is false?

5. Many new churches in Africa are planted using funds from the West. In your experience, what are the advantages and disadvantages of this patronage?
