STEP 2: RUFFLE

A Align both Ruffle pieces, with right sides together. Sew 1 of the short ends together with a 1/4-in/ 6-mm seam allowance, so you now have 1 long Ruffle piece. Press seam open. Press Ruffle in half lengthwise with right sides together and sew each short end closed with a 1/4-in/6-mm seam allowance. Turn Ruffle right-side out, aligning raw edges; press flat.

B Along the raw edge, work Gathering Method Two (see page 24). Pin the Ruffle to fabric A Apron piece, along the outside curved edge. Align the Ruffle seam at the center Front lower edge notch, then pin the ends of the Ruffle 1/2 in/12 mm down from upper edge. Pull string to gather Ruffle to fit the curved Apron edge. Pin and distribute the gathers evenly. Baste Ruffle piece to Apron, 3/8 in/1 cm from raw edge, being careful not to stitch over the gathering string. Remove string and discard.

C With fabric A Apron piece right-side up, place fabric B Apron piece on top, with right sides together, and the Ruffle sandwiched between the layers. Align edges and pin along the outside curved edge, leaving upper edge open. Sew pieces together with a 1/2-in/12-mm seam allowance along curved edge. Clip the seam allowance along the curved edge, being careful to not clip the seam. Turn Apron right-side out through opening and press. Baste upper edge opening together, 1/4 in/6 mm from edge, so the Apron layers won’t shift when you are attaching the Waist Ties.
