Chapter Two

“Want to get some coffee? Decent stuff, not the swill they serve here at the tournament?”

The rest of the registration process had proceeded without incident. Jason’s boiling lust had subsided to a persistent simmer. He wanted to invite Matt up to his room right away, but the guy seemed shy, despite the stunt he had pulled in the queue. Jason figured he’d better slow down, at least a bit, or he’d scare Matt away.

“Thanks, but I really should study.” Matt’s glasses magnified his warm, cocoa-coloured eyes.

“Oh, come on. There’s a Starbucks on the corner. My treat,” Jason added, remembering what Matt had said about his limited funds. “I can give you some pointers about the play. That’ll help you a lot more than a couple more hours with the word lists.”

“Well, I don’t know…”

“Please? Keep me company, at least. It can be pretty lonely at these competitions, with everyone out to beat everyone else.” Jason guessed Matt was the sympathetic type.

“Okay, sure. You’re right. I’m just so wound up. I feel like I should be spending every minute preparing for tomorrow.”

“Better to relax.” Jason took Matt’s arm, leading him towards the escalator. The other man didn’t resist. His bare skin was hot and moist under Jason’s fingertips. “Get your mind off the game for a while. Playing six or eight rounds in one day can be pretty intense.”

“I’ll bet. I’m psyched, though. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time.”

As they exited the revolving door, the heat slammed into them like a ten tonne truck. “Whew! That’s brutal,” Jason commented as he steered the other man along the sidewalk.

“Actually, you look seriously flushed.” Matt extricated himself from Jason’s grip and gave his guide a once over. “Are you feeling all right?” Jason’s cheeks burnt under the other man’s scrutiny. It was true that he felt dishevelled and damp. His shirt was limp, soaked through, while his pants grew tighter by the instant under Matt’s influence. “Maybe you should go back to your room and rest.”

“Coffee first.” Jason held the door for Matt to enter. “What’ll you have?”

“Double espresso.” Matt sank into an upholstered chair. His thighs sprawled open. Perhaps he was suffering from some constriction around the groin, too. Jason grinned to himself as he headed for the counter.

When Jason returned with their drinks, Matt was looking around the trendy interior, obviously impressed. “Thanks!” he said. “It’s embarrassing to admit, but I’ve actually never been in a Starbucks before.”

“You’re kidding!”

“No, really. I’ve lived a pretty sheltered life. I grew up in Grant—little farm town about fifty miles southwest of North Platte. Went to community college in Scottsbluff while working in my uncle’s grocery store. I’ve been to Lincoln and Omaha a few times and twice to Kansas City, but that’s about it. Of course, we’ve got our local java spots. I just could never understand why somebody would pay three bucks for a dollar cup of coffee.”

“Well, it is great coffee…” Jason watched Matt’s ripe lips as the other man took a sip.
