BRINGING THE OUTSIDE IN

You can bring your outdoor miniature garden inside for a few days at a time in the winter to use for a centerpiece, for example, but it should be placed outside to rest afterwards, and watered thoroughly until it drains out the bottom. The time the garden spends outside should be greater than the time it spends inside—the trick is to not let it acclimate to the indoor environment. While inside, your outdoor miniature garden soil should remain damp and not be left to dry out. Avoid direct sunlight when your garden is in its temporary place inside too, as the soil may dry out too fast and plant leaves could get scorched.

Never move a garden immediately from a warm room to the frosty outdoors, or from a shaded room to full, hot, outdoor sun, without first staging it in the garage or on a covered porch for at least a couple of days. The purpose of staging is to help the garden adapt to the change in environment slowly and gradually, and to avoid shocking the plants with extreme climate changes. For best results, choose a staging spot with light and temperatures that are in between the outdoor and indoor environments.
