Preserving The Stock

• Select one or two of the better stools of each variety.

• Cut off any regrowth and place them in a sheltered position outside the polytunnel.

• Leave the plants outside until there has been a week’s cold weather when temperatures have not risen above 5°C (40°F). Frost at this stage does more good than harm.

• After this treatment remove all the dead leaves and return the plants to the polytunnel. During periods of intense cold it may be necessary to give some protection to prevent the compost in the pots from freezing solid. Plunging them into a soil bed will usually suffice.

• In late February give a little water.

• As spring sunshine increases temperatures and new shoots appear, increase the watering but do not feed.

• When the shoots are large enough, take cuttings, in most districts this will be during April.

• Discard the stools.

Note: The stock may become diseased as years go by. To avoid this, purchase new cuttings every third or fourth year.
