Watering

Roses like and need water. The rule of thumb is to make sure roses get about 2 inches a week. Like so many other garden plants, deep soakings are much better than frequent, shallow waterings. Set the hose at the foot of the rose (hopefully, you created a nice basin when you planted it — see the preceding planting sections) and let water trickle in. Or if you have a big bed of roses or roses and companions, use a soaker hose or install an in-ground system (Chapter 5 can fill you in on watering tools). All these methods are good because the water gets right to the roots. You avoid waste and don’t splash water on the foliage (as a sprinkler does), which invites fungal diseases.
